Secretary Naig Honors Ferguson Cattle Company with a
Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award
Third-generation cattle farmers in Pocahontas Co. receive the award for outstanding leadership in agriculture
DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 20, 2019) – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig presented the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award to Marvin, Craig and Chance Ferguson, owners of Ferguson Cattle Company in Laurens, Iowa, today. Six family members spanning three generations are involved in the family’s beef operation.
“Multi-generation family farms are the backbone of Iowa agriculture, and I want to acknowledge the Ferguson family’s commitment and contributions to our state’s beef production,” said Secretary Naig. “The Fergusons are carrying on their family’s legacy while being good stewards of the land. They still make time to mentor the next generation of beef farmers.”
The Fergusons raise a cow-calf herd, Holstein steers, show cattle and operate a row crop farming operation in Pocahontas Co. They were nominated for the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award by their neighbor and friend John Sobotka.
Sobotka commends the Fergusons for their environmental stewardship, animal husbandry and community involvement. By using rotational grazing, the Fergusons prevent their pastures from being overrun. They also have a state-of-the-art livestock facility that aids in manure management.
All three generations of the Ferguson family are active and well-respected in their community. Marvin is involved in the local chapter of the Kiwanis international service club. Craig is a member of the Pocahontas Co. Beef Producers Association. Chance and Craig help with the Pocahontas Co. Fair and they are always willing to help the local 4-H Club with their beef projects.
The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award is made possible thanks to financial support of the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers. This award recognizes Iowa livestock farmers who take pride in caring for the environment, their livestock and being good neighbors. It is named in memory of Gary Wergin, a long-time WHO Radio farm broadcaster who helped create the award.
